After climbing to the top of the featherweight division, Ilia Topuria is ready to conquer a new weight class.
Stepping into the main event spotlight at UFC 317 in Las Vegas, ‘El Matador’ makes his lightweight debut, challenging ex-titleholder Charles Oliveira for the vacant 155-pound championship.
Round 1
Topuria comes out punching right away as Oliveira looks to attempt the lower limbs. ‘Do Bronx’ quickly ties up Topuria, pressing him against the fence. However, it’s Topuria who gets things down to the mat, climbing into side control and nearly crucifixing Oliveira. As they scramble, Oliveira grabs Topuria’s leg, looking to cinch in a knee bar. Topuria fights his way out, and they reset on their feet.
Topuria lands a shot inside and follows it up with a vicious right hand that sends Oliveira crashing to the canvas. ‘El Matador’ follows it up with a couple of ground-and-pound strikes, but by then, Oliveira is already unconscious, forcing the referee to step in and bring a halt to the fight
Official Result: Ilia Topuria def. Charles Oliveira via KO (right hook) at 2:00 of Round 1 to win the undisputed UFC lightweight championship.
