Sage Northcutt Calls Out Shinya Aoki Over Fight Delay: ‘What’s The Problem?’

Northcutt is looking to make his return to action after more than three years against Aoki in July or August.

Sage Northcutt

Sage Northcutt wants to know what the hold-up is.

Northcutt hasn’t competed since a first-round knockout defeat to Cosmo Alexandre back in May 2019.

It was a brutal knockout that required extensive surgery to heal the eight facial fractures the American suffered as a result.

Over three years on, the former UFC lightweight and welterweight is looking to finally return, and he wants Japanese MMA legend Shinya Aoki or ONE Championship’s upcoming July or August cards.

The problem is, there seems to be a hold up from Aoki’s side which Northcutt addressed on Twitter.

“Hey Shinya@a_ok_i, I was told you were going to be my opponent on One championship’s July or August card if you didn’t get injured in your grappling match. Why won’t you fight me on the July or August Amazon Card.. What’s the problem?”

Sage Northcutt Was Previously Booked To Return Against Aoki

Of course, it should be noted that Northcutt was originally set to face Aoki in April last year.

However, the former ONE lightweight champion had to pull out after testing positive for COVID-19 which only served to be a further setback for Northcutt.

Over a year on, it looks like the promotion is finally rebooking it, provided Aoki gives the green signal.

Should the matchup get rebooked, it would certainly be a great addition to ONE’s first live event set to stream on Amazon Prime on August 26.

The main event will be a flyweight championship rematch between current champion Adriano Moraes and former UFC flyweight king Demetrious Johnson.
