The UFC lightweight division faces uncertainty as champion Ilia Topuria steps away from competition due to personal challenges. Topuria revealed in November that he would not defend his title in early 2026, citing a “difficult moment” in his personal life. In response, the UFC has booked an interim lightweight championship fight between Justin Gaethje and Paddy Pimblett for January 24.
Topuria detailed the nature of his struggles in a social media post, claiming he was being extorted with “false allegations of domestic abuse”:
“Over the past several weeks, I have made the difficult decision to temporarily step away from defending my title. This was not a decision I took lightly. However, when circumstances arise that threaten your personal integrity, your family, and your reputation, there comes a point when you must address them directly.
In recent months, I have been subjected to severe and unacceptable pressure, including threats to disseminate false allegations of domestic abuse unless financial demands were met. These allegations are entirely unfounded. The truth is not a matter of opinion — it is a matter of evidence.
All relevant evidence has been carefully preserved and documented, including audio recordings, written communications, witness statements, and video material. This evidence has been submitted to the appropriate judicial authorities in order to pursue legal action for attempted extortion, falsification of evidence, misappropriation of funds and personal property, and multiple threats.”
Sonnen Supports Stripping the Title If Eligibility is Compromised
Three-time UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen weighed in on the situation, suggesting the UFC could have grounds to strip Topuria of his lightweight belt while he deals with these personal matters.
“[The] argument is that the interim belt is for those that are dealing with an illness or an injury, if we would like to show grace to an undisputed champion because he’s missing matches specifically for illness or injury,” Sonnen explained on The Ariel Helwani Show.
“And the moment Ilia informs us that he is missing matches for anything outside of the criteria of illness or injury, that’s when you strip him. That there is no precedent for an interim championship. … A lot of guys didn’t tell the truth, a lot of guys have missed fights and said they’re hurt because they didn’t want to make the walk. But if you’re making a claim outside of illness or injury … you’re not eligible. You’ve gotta be stripped. I think that is a fair point.”
While Sonnen emphasized he does not want to see Topuria’s achievements diminished, he believes the UFC must follow precedent when a champion cannot defend due to circumstances unrelated to injury or medical reasons.
“I don’t want him stripped. I’m on Ilia’s side of this. I don’t really like what he’s going through. I think he shared more with us than he has to. I also think he’s innocent and seems like a good guy. I really don’t think he would have done these things. However, yeah, they’ve got to strip him. If he’s not making the claim that he’s injured and has some kind of doctor’s report to back it up, as bogus as those can be, he’s got to be stripped.”
Ilia Topuria has built an impressive career in the UFC, moving from featherweight to lightweight and achieving historic finishes along the way. As a featherweight, he knocked out former champion Alexander Volkanovski and defended his title by finishing Max Holloway. After moving up to lightweight, he defeated former champion Charles Oliveira to capture the 155-pound belt.
Despite his success, the current hiatus raises questions about the title’s status and who will represent the division in the meantime. Sonnen’s comments suggest the UFC may have to act decisively if Topuria’s personal issues prevent him from fulfilling his role as champion.
