Yair Rodriguez Outworks Patricio Pitbull, Lands Unanimous Decision Victory – UFC 314 Results (Highlights)

After dominating the competition in Bellator for the last 15 years, Patricio Pitbull made his long-awaited Octagon debut on Saturday night, squaring off with former interim featherweight titleholder Yair Rodriguez at UFC 314.

Rodriguez walked into the bout looking to bounce back from back-to-back losses against Alexander Volkanovski and Brian Ortega. Meanwhile, the 37-year-old Pitbull stepped into the cage determined to prove that he still has plenty left in the tank.

Round 1

Rodriguez opened things up with a right kick followed by a looping left hand. Both fighters were very calculated in the early going, with Pitbull trying to close the distance. Rodriguez fires a kick up the middle and goes high with a head kick. Rodriguez throws a jumping switch kick that gets a reaction from the crowd. Through three minutes, all of the offense has come from Rodriguez.

Rodriguez partially connects with a switch head kick and then a kick to the body. Pitbull closes the distance and clinches up, but gets nothing done. Pitbull throws a one-two with just over a minute left. Pitbull connects with a big calf kick that takes Rodriguez off his feet. Pitbull goes down and gets into Rodriguez’s half guard, but it’s likely not enough to win him the round.

Round 2

Pitbull goes up high with a head kick, followed by a low kick to the lead leg of Rodriguez. Pitbull lands a good left hand, and the fighters are finally starting to open up a bit with Rodriguez taunting his opponent. They continue to trade calf kicks. Rodriguez throws a bevy of high kicks, but none of them hit the mark. Pitbull closes the distance and scores a takedown, but Rodriguez promptly backs his way to the fence and wall walks back up.

Rodriguez goes right back to the kicking game and lands a straight right hand. Rodriguez throws another high kick as Pitbull struggles to get within range. Pitbull moves in and catches Rodriguez with a combination, forcing Rodriguez to circle away. Rodriguez connects with a quick one-two. Rodriguez is staying far more active as Pitbull dives in for another takedown attempt. Rodriguez stuffs it with 20 seconds to go.

Pitbull clinches up against the fence and ends up getting taken down by Rodriguez to close out the penultimate round.

Round 3

Another slow-starting round for Pitbull, who is potentially down 2-0 going into the third. Rodriguez goes high with a kick, and Pitbull blocks it. Pitbull rips to the body and connects with a right hand that takes Rodriguez off balance. Rodriguez circles the Octagon as Pitbull stalks forward. Pitbull throws a right and then appears to land a left, but Rodriguez comes right back with a right hand that puts Pitbull on the mat.

Rodriguez settles into his guard and starts dropping bombs on the former Bellator champion. Pitbull desperately attempts to control Rodriguez’s posture, but he’s getting absolutely mauled with less than two minutes to go. Pitbull nearly locks in an armbar, but Rodriguez fights his way out of it. Instead of completely disengaging, Rodriguez goes fishing for a heel hook. Pitbull escapes and gets back to his feet, but there are only 20 seconds left in the fight. Pitbull fails to pull the trigger, likely surrendering a decision to the former interim titleholder.
