Darren Elkins walked into UFC Vegas 120 already telling the fight world this was the last one. Yadier del Valle apparently heard that and decided the retirement party needed a cannon blast instead of a slow dance.
Del Valle crushed Elkins with a clean left hand and forced the stoppage just 35 seconds into round one on Saturday night. The featherweight bout was barely out of the feeling-out stage before Elkins tried to work through the kind of fire that made his career famous, only this time the damage came too fast and too clean.

Elkins had fended off an early kick and looked for a takedown, but del Valle kept pressing until the opening appeared. After the biggest win of his UFC run so far, he pointed the attention back at Elkins and told the crowd, “Please for everyone a round of applause for Darren Elkins,” before adding, “This was one of the hardest camps I’ve had. This is the first thing. So I was ready for this.”
That respect mattered because Elkins is not just another name on a bout sheet. The man built a cult following by being nearly impossible to discourage, dragging opponents into ugly water, and surviving things most fighters would have used as a medical excuse. On a card that also carried plenty of UFC Vegas 120 chaos from weigh-ins to fight night, this was the emotional gut punch.
Elkins still got his glove-laying moment after the knockout. He summed up the feeling with one word, “Gratitude,” then admitted, “I didn’t love how this ended but that’s life. I’m going to keep going. I can’t lose in life. I’m happy.”
He also reflected on the mileage that got him here, saying, “This has been a journey. Almost 17 years. I never thought I’d still be doing it at 42 years old. I always left in the cage. Sometimes it didn’t go my way but keep going.”
Elkins exits at 29-13, with 29 UFC featherweight appearances, four post-fight bonuses, and 18 wins in the division. Del Valle leaves with the highlight. Elkins leaves with the kind of reputation that survives one ugly final clip, because anybody who watched UFC Vegas 120’s hard-fight build knew exactly what he was signing up for.
