Alex Volkanovski shared his analysis of his loss to Islam Makhachev at UFC 284.
Earlier today, reigning featherweight king Volkanovski marked his return to action against Makhachev in the main event of UFC 284 at the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia. He put in a tough performance but eventually dropped the bout to the lightweight champion on the judges’ scorecards. Having entered as a huge underdog, Volkanovski received praise for keeping things competitive and narrowly missing out on the win.

During the post-fight press conference for UFC 284, Alex Volkanovski shared his thoughts on his defeat to Makhachev. He believes he missed out on some opportunities and had a good shot at coming out on top.
“I didn’t capitalize straight away, which I should have. I started realizing that later. I could’ve done more and try and get in there. We end up scrambling and I went all out doing something on top of him. Maybe I could’ve done that earlier or maybe not. I’ll watch the fight and do some research. But it’s pretty clear I could’ve won that fight. That’s why I’m hard on myself.”
“I gotta watch that fight back. I can rematch this guy.”
Volkanovski underestimated Makhachev’s striking
‘The Great’ admitted he did not regard his opponent’s striking abilities high enough and maybe second-guessed himself during the fight.
“A lot of people counted me out but I never counted myself out. I was expecting to win so I’m disappointed. I know I could’ve done more and capitalized on some things earlier as well. I did think he was going to be stronger. But anyway, what can you do? I underestimated his striking, he underestimated my wrestling and stuff like that.”
Alex Volkanovski is expected to take on Yair Rodriguez, who won the interim featherweight title in the co-main event of the night, for his next bout.
