Dana White Confirms That Covington Gets Next Shot At UFC Gold

One could argue that Colby Covington deserved the last two shots at the UFC welterweight strap. Finally, Dana White has confirmed that this will officially be happening

Covington put on a masterclass against Robbie Lawler over the weekend. He landed an outrageous number of strikes, and takedowns on the former champ. The sheer pace and cardio of Covington was overwhelming to the unbreakable Lawler.

Following this fight, there was questions about whether this performance was enough to negate Jorge Masvidal’s 5 second knockout of Ben Askren to earn a title shot. The trouble with Covington is that he was already an interim champion which should have earned him this shot. However, when he was unable to compete when the UFC wanted him to, they stripped him of the interim title. Despite this, the UFC went on to book two other challengers instead.

Nevertheless, it seems time for Covington to get the shot at Kamaru Usman. When asked at the Contender Series media scrum if Colby was next, Dana White confirmed that was the plan.

“That’s why I put Covington on ESPN against a guy like Lawler. You can say whatever you want about Covington. you don’t like him. you don’t this, that, or whatever. he put on a clinic against Lawler, who is a beast. Lawler’s been in all the big fights, former world champion, hits like a truck and Colby completely shut him down. His cardio was impressive and the way that he beat Lawler was even more impressive.”

This is quite the compliment for Colby Covington.

Especially considering his wrestling heavy gameplan, which White is notoriously not a fan of. However, what does this mean for Jorge Masvidal?

“Listen, we’re going to offer him a fight, and if he accepts the fight, he does and if he doesn’t, he doesn’t.”

All in all, it seems like Dana White is doing the right thing, and giving Colby Covington the next shot at UFC gold.
