Weili Zhang Talks Who Her Potential Next Opponent Could Be
Weili Zhang is looking to make the first defense of her UFC Strawweight title. However, she says that she is not interested in fighting Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
Zhang earned her title by finishing Jessica Andrade early in the first round, at UFC Fight Night 157. As a result, she became the first Chinese UFC Champion, solidifying her place in history. Yet now, she is looking to figure out who she will defend that title against.
Joanna Jedrzejczyk had a great performance against Michelle Waterson, at UFC Tampa. However, Zhang says she does not want to fight the former champ. In a recent interview with TMZ, she says she has her eyes set on someone else who held the title.
“For Joanna, I don’t think she’s the fighter she used to be, I’m not very interested. She needs me more than I need her and she is struggling in the division to fight me, but I don’t know if I will give her the chance. I want to fight the best, I think maybe Rose is a good [fight].”
Considering the fact that Joanna turned down a fight with Weili Zhang three times, this is not surprising. However, Zhang did give another opponent that she may be interested in.
“If I had the chance I’d like to go up a weight class and fight the best and right now I think Valentina is one of the best female fighters.”
Rose Namajunas seems more likely, than Valentina Shevchenko, to be next for Weili Zhang. Regardless of who it will be against, it is exciting to see these new match ups in the 115lb weight division.
