UFC 329 already had chaos all over the card, and Wang Cong made sure the women’s flyweight division got its own little grenade. After beating Tracy Cortez by unanimous decision on Saturday night in Las Vegas, Wang used her post-fight interview to call for a rematch with UFC flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko.
That is not a random name grab from a contender trying to skip the line. Wang and Shevchenko have old business from outside the Octagon, and Wang is clearly tired of letting that history sit in the corner collecting dust. The judges gave Wang three identical 29-27 scorecards against Cortez, which means she still banked the fight even after losing a point for an illegal knee in the second round.

Wang Wants The Bullet Again
Asked why now was the time to book Shevchenko again, Wang did not exactly tiptoe around the champ. She said, “Yeah, you know, she, she had talk about, our fight. You guys know she lost to me, and she’s, not agree on the result. If she’s not agree, then let’s find out again in Octagon. I, I will show how I shut her mouth down.”
That is spicy enough on its own, but the Pereira-Adesanya comparison made it even louder. Wang was asked whether the UFC saw a built-in rivalry similar to Alex Pereira chasing Israel Adesanya into MMA. Her answer was short and extremely on brand. “Yes, many fans agree on this, and, just like Alex Pereira, he’s, he’s hunting, I- Israel Adesanya, I’m hunting the Valentina Shevchenko.”
The history matters here because Wang defeated Shevchenko by unanimous decision in a 2015 Kunlun Fight kickboxing match, years before this became a UFC flyweight conversation. Shevchenko later became one of the cleanest technicians and most accomplished champions in women’s MMA, while Wang is now trying to turn a ranked UFC win into leverage. It is the kind of weird old fight-sports receipt that never really dies. It just waits for someone to get a microphone.
Wang’s win also came against a serious ranked opponent. Cortez had just made a major camp move to Mexico City before this matchup, but Wang’s kicking game and counters kept dragging the fight back into her world. The point deduction could have made things sweaty on the cards. Instead, all three judges still landed on Wang.

Now the UFC has a fun problem. Shevchenko is the champion, and Wang is not going to be handed that kind of matchup just because she brought receipts from 2015. But after Shevchenko shut down Zhang Weili at UFC 322, the division needs contenders with heat. Wang just beat Cortez, invoked Pereira, and told the champ she wants to settle it in the Octagon. That is not a bad night’s work.
With Gable Steveson smashing his UFC debut, Adrian Yanez starching Cody Garbrandt, and Wang calling for Shevchenko, the UFC 329 undercard did plenty before the big names even got loose. Wang may not get the champ next, but she just made the conversation a lot harder to ignore.
