Vinny Magalhaes says he never trained triangle defense with Chael Sonnen

If someone asked me whether Vinny Magalhaes will end up in the UFC I’d ask you if a bear micturates in the woods. If you have Bellator, Strikeforce and UFC calling you up when you are out of contract it doesn’t take a genius to figure out which one you’d choose. That’s like giving me a choice between training for my upcoming fight with Anderson Silva with either Vinny Magalhaes or Rousimar Palhares. I’m no Ryo Chonan so I’m not even gonna think about leg locks. Vinny on the other hand was a well-respected BJJ player before he even made the transition to MMA, even getting into The Ultimate Fighter mostly on the strength of his BBJ credentials. In an interview with he talked about a number of topics, including training with the man many people can beat Anderson Silva.

“Basically what we worked on was top game. We did work some submission defence, of course. But the best thing is not to get caught in a submission in the first place. If you’re just working submission defence, you have to first be in a submission. You don’t want to get that far. A lot of people ask me when they hear I was training Chael, ‘Why don’t you just work triangle defence?’ No! For me to teach you triangle defence, first I have to teach you how to be in a triangle. And I don’t want him to be there in the first place”

While I’m not sure how wise that is, I’m not a BJJ black belt, an M-1 champion or a professional MMA fighter who has challenged for the middleweight belt so my thoughts are just as valid as every other keyboard warrior out there. Who knows, maybe Chael’s sports psychology and hypnosis sessions will be the deciding factor, not his submission defence. Regardless, The quote above is only a small part of a fantastic interview with the M-1 champion which would only be made better if it was conducted by BJ Penn himself. [source]
