Flyweight Title Fight: Shevchenko Vs. Jedrzejczyk Set For UFC 231

Dana White confirms that Valentina Schevchenko will fight Joanna Jedrzejczyk for the vacant flyweight title due to UFC 230 gaining a new main event with Derrick “The Black Beast” Lewis taking on Daniel Cormier for the Heavyweight title.

I asked Dana White via text if this means he’ll move Valentina Shevchenko back to Toronto, against Joanna Jedrzejczyk. He responded “yes.”

The last few days have been a roller coaster ride for the world of MMA from the UFC 229 post-fight brawl to Dustin Poirer being pulled from fighting at UFC 230 due to an undisclosed injury. However, this perhaps sheds some light at the end of the tunnel as the flyweight division once again has an epic title fight rebooked for UFC 231 in Toronto.

Originally, this fight had been canceled as the UFC were desperately scrambling for a main event for the Madison Square Garden card on November 3rd. There had been a massive fan appeal for a 165lbs title fight between Dustin Poirer and Nate Diaz but the UFC was very much against this. So much so, that they booked the virtually unknown flyweight fighter Sijara Eubanks to fight Valentina Schevchenko for the flyweight title, headlining the card.

The previous two Madison Square Garden cards have seen Conor McGregor take on Eddie Alvarez as well as George St-Pierre making his much-anticipated comeback against Michael Bisping. As a result of this flyweight fight being booked, fans were rightly outraged as this was the title fight nobody wanted to see.

Fans were also furious that the title fight between Schevchenko and Jedrzejcyzk at UFC 231 had been canceled in order to put on this fight. Thankfully, the UFC has made the decision to pull this fight from the card due to the mass outrage from the fans and keep the UFC 231 flyweight title fight in Toronto intact.

Jedrzejcyzk is coming off 2 losses to Rose Namajunas after previously defending her strawweight title 6 times and Schevchenko will be coming off her annihilation of Cachoeira and a canceled title fight against Nicco Montano.

This upcoming title fight promises to put the Women’s flyweight division on the map as these two popular fighters are set to fight in Toronto on Saturday 8th December.
