PFL Dubai delivered a tense main event on Friday night at Coca-Cola Arena, as Usman Nurmagomedov and Paul Hughes met again to settle unfinished business. Their first encounter in January was a Fight of the Year contender, and this second clash carried even higher stakes with the lightweight championship on the line.
Rematch with History Behind It
Nurmagomedov entered the bout unbeaten in 20 professional fights, including victories over names like Patricio Pitbull, Benson Henderson, and Alexander Shabliy during his Bellator and PFL run. Hughes came in riding an eight-wins-in-nine stretch, highlighted by a blistering 42-second finish in May and a big win over A.J. McKee last October to earn this title shot.
The intensity was obvious from the opening introductions as both men stared each other down before touching gloves.

Round 1 — Tactical Start with Early Drama
The fight opened with measured striking. Nurmagomedov quickly established his jab, switching stances and attacking Hughes’ legs to control distance. He mixed in front kicks and threatened with a flying knee that narrowly missed. Hughes looked to counter with quick punches and low kicks of his own.
A low blow from Nurmagomedov paused the action, giving Hughes some recovery time. When they resumed, the champion worked behind straight punches, but Hughes found success in the pocket, landing short hooks during brief exchanges. Near the end of the round, Nurmagomedov got to the back in a scramble and threatened a choke, forcing Hughes to stay calm under pressure. The round ended with a minor headbutt incident that went unnoticed by the referee, leaving Hughes visibly frustrated.
Round 2 — Hughes Fires Back
Hughes came out with more urgency in the second. He pressed forward and began landing crisp combinations, especially with his left hand. Nurmagomedov answered with jabs and low kicks, maintaining his composure but absorbing more shots than in the first.
Midway through, Nurmagomedov timed a takedown well, briefly controlling from top position before Hughes scrambled up. The Irishman’s confidence grew as he pushed the pace, connecting with a clean right hook late in the round. Nurmagomedov continued to score with his jab but ate a few body shots in return. The round ended with momentum clearly swinging toward Hughes.
Round 3 — Champion Regains Control
The third round saw both men trading heated words as they circled. Hughes checked a low kick and smiled, but Nurmagomedov tightened up his striking, drilling the body and snapping Hughes’ head back with sharp jabs.
Hughes responded with heavy pressure, backing Nurmagomedov toward the fence with combinations, but the champion adjusted by mixing in takedown attempts and clinch work. A clean right hand from Nurmagomedov landed flush, slowing Hughes down. Usman also began to use angles more effectively, landing multiple unanswered shots during short bursts. Hughes had moments, but Nurmagomedov’s accuracy and body work reasserted control this round.
Round 4 — Physical Battle Intensifies
An accidental low kick once again halted the fight early in the fourth. Hughes was clearly in discomfort but continued after a brief break. Nurmagomedov wasted no time attacking the body with kicks and punches. He secured a trip takedown, briefly taking Hughes’ back, but the challenger fought out and returned to striking range.
Both fighters were visibly wearing damage. Hughes’ left eye was swelling and bleeding from accumulated jabs, while Nurmagomedov’s pace slowed slightly. Hughes tried to rally, landing several left hooks and pushing forward. Usman countered with precise combinations and strong kicks, keeping control. This was the most physical round, filled with clinch battles and bruising exchanges that had the crowd on edge.
Round 5 — Tight Finish Under the Lights
With the fight still competitive, both corners urged their fighters to leave everything in the cage. Hughes came out aggressive, landing early punches and shooting for a takedown, but Nurmagomedov defended well. The champion landed clean jabs and a big right hand that caught Hughes coming in.
Halfway through the round, a clash of heads opened a cut above Nurmagomedov’s right eye, prompting a brief doctor check. The fight resumed, and both men exchanged flurries in the center. Hughes pushed forward relentlessly, but Usman countered smartly and then hit a flying knee-to-takedown sequence in the final 30 seconds, ending the fight in control on Hughes’ back.
Official Decision
After five competitive rounds, the judges scored the fight 50-45, 49-46, 48-47 for Usman Nurmagomedov, who remains undefeated and continues his dominant run as lightweight champion.
Result: Usman Nurmagomedov def. Paul Hughes by unanimous decision.
