UFC’s White House Card on June 14 Could Be Unsanctioned Without D.C. Permit, Commission Stresses Licensing and Medical Requirements

The UFC is preparing Freedom Fights 250 at the White House on June 14, coinciding with President Donald Trump’s birthday. The event is promoted as a celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.

Andrew Huff, chairman of the District of Columbia Combat Sports Commission, explained that the UFC must obtain a $100 permit to sanction the event officially. Without this permit, fights would not be recognized in fighters’ records. Huff noted that UFC officials have not requested the permit, possibly because the White House is federal property.

“We don’t know anything. Every promoter in the District of Columbia should be, and is, held to the same standard, whether you’re putting on a small wrestling show or a major event,” Huff said.

“I’m concerned about precedent. What happens when someone puts on a boxing match in Malcolm X Park? They don’t need to get us involved?”

Licensing and Safety Requirements

The D.C. commission requires fighters, managers, and promoters to have occupational licenses. Competitors must submit medical records and undergo examinations from doctors assigned by the commission. Huff pointed out that while the UFC has its own medical staff, the commission ensures impartial oversight.

There is precedent for events on federal or non-state land. During the COVID-19 pandemic, UFC staged fights at Tachi Palace Casino Resort on the Tachi-Yokut Tribe reservation in California. That location has its own commission, independent of the California State Athletic Commission, but fight results are still recognized officially. UFC has also held fights internationally without local oversight, including an event in Shanghai involving Brian Ortega.

Even with the permit issue, UFC appears ready to proceed. Wins and titles from Freedom Fights 250 are expected to count, but the situation highlights the unusual regulatory challenges of hosting a fight on federal land. The promotion’s decision to bypass the D.C. commission has drawn attention, but fans can anticipate the card will go on as planned.
