Nina Nunes is out of her fight with Cynthia Calvillo at UFC Vegas 58.
UFC flyweight Nina Nunes will no longer be competing today. Nunes was scheduled to face Cynthia Calvillo this Saturday at the UFC Apex, Las Vegas, NV. Although she did step on the scales during the official weigh-ins, things went downhill after hitting the mark at 125.5 lbs.
Nina Nunes v Cynthia Calvillo canceled for UFC Vegas 58
“The Strina” took to her Instagram to share the news with her fans. She revealed that she will be forced to withdraw from the bout on fight day after suffering from a “stomach virus” following the Friday afternoon weigh-ins.
“Hey everyone, I had an amazing camp and the best weight cut yet. Unfortunately I picked up a stomach virus and have been sick since right after weigh ins. I tried as much as I could to make this better and still be able to fight.
“Sadly it has taken a tear on my body and I won’t be able to perform tonight. Sorry to my opponent. We are rescheduling it as we speak. Thank you Mick Maynard.”
It appears that the promotion is trying to reschedule the bout for a later date. More updates and official announcements are expected to follow if all parties agree to push it back.
Nunes & Calvillo were looking to turn their fortunes
Having been out of competition for over a year, Nunes was going into the bout after dropping two in a row, a submission loss to Mackenzie Dern, and a unanimous decision defeat to Tatiana Suarez. The 36-year-old Florida native was riding a four-fight win streak before her latest results.
Calvillo was looking to get back to winning ways this weekend as well. The 34-year-old California was going through a skid in her career that saw her drop three consecutive bouts, with the two most recent ones coming by way of TKO, one to Jessica Andrade, and a corner stoppage to Andrea Lee.
Nunes wants to reschedule the fight but it’s unclear if and when that’ll be. Aiemann Zahabi’s contest with Ricky Turcios replaces their bout on the main card at UFC Vegas 58.
