UFC Rankings Shake Up: Dern Debuts On Charts, “Jacare” Drops Three Spots After Close Loss

The aftermath of UFC 224 has really shaken up the top ten rankings. After an action-packed evening that saw many fighters flourish and many more flounder, some of the rankings changes will be more surprising that others.

Mackenzie Dern debuted in the top ten at strawweight despite not making weight for a third time, but her performance against Amanda Bobby Cooper was nothing short of incredible. Dern dropped her opponent with a nasty overhand right and quickly locked in a submission in the first round.

Elsewhere on the card, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza lost a close and competitive fight to Kelvin Gastelum in a split decision that could have honestly gone either way. That close loss really set back the submission specialist, as he dropped three spots in the middleweight top ten, from number two to number five.

Raquel Pennington challenged bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes and was violently denied. She dropped two spots from number two to number four.

Here’s how the UFC determines their divisional rankings (MMA Mania):

“Rankings were generated by a voting panel made up of media members. The media members were asked to vote for who they feel are the top fighters in the UFC by weight-class and pound-for-pound. A fighter is only eligible to be voted on if they are in active status in the UFC. A fighter can appear in more than one weight division at a time. The champion and interim champion are considered to be in the top positions of their respective divisions and therefore are not eligible for voting by weight-class. However, the champions can be voted on for the pound-for-pound rankings.”

”Jacare” dropping three spots is pretty shocking considering how close the fight was with Gastelum.
