UFC Chile Recap: Usman Coasts Over Maia, and a Gang of Exciting Finishes

It’s a sad Sunday morning, as we recall and reflect on the events of last night.

Of course the Modern Godfather of BJJ in Mixed Martial Arts, Demian Maia lost a unanimous five round decision to Kamaru Usman in a lackluster affair that I have trouble recalling even six hours later. It started with real hope for Maia, as he won the first round using his rangy strikes and even scoring a brief take down. But from the second round on, it was all Usman.

Maia is truly an OG of the sport, and after losing in his two title opportunities, it might be that he is just too old to continue being a contender in one of MMA’s most premier divisions.

Usman once again scored a high profile victory. But still lacks the signature win that can get people excited about a title shot. But that didn’t stop the Nigerian Nightmare from trying to flex on Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley in his post-fight interview. But as this clip below shows, you always gotta watch out for that clap back.

Damn, Tyron Woodley says “waking up with the smelling salts.” Just brutal. That’s a verbal 10-9 to the champ. As fun as it was to actually here Woodley consider fighting a real Welterweight contender, I still want to see Usman and Colby Covington get after it. I know Colby is booked in what is somehow a interim Welterweight title show vs. Dos Anjos, but the heart wants what it wants. And I want Usman and Covington. I cannot be dissuaded.

Despite a lackluster main event, the rest of UFC Chile was actually a great time. UFC: South America remains one of my favorite regional promotions, right along with UFC: Europe.

We had wild finishes throughout the card, including a body slam KO off of an arm bar attempt, and a desperation knee bar submission victory. So some really good times were had by all (except the victims of these brutal finishes).

Because I love you guys, and know that you’re all extremely lazy, I’ve assembled all the wonderful finishes from UFC Chile below. Hit up the comment section and let us know what your favorite finish of the night was.
