UFC 224 Play-By-Play: Amanda Nunes Wears Down Raquel Pennington For Fifth Round TKO

UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes defended her belt on Saturday night in front of her native Brazilian crowd.

Round One:

Hard leg kicks from Nunes already doing damage, a cut appears on Pennington’s leg. Pennington gets backed into and against the cage.

The challenger begins countering Nunes’ leg kicks with a 1-2 combination, and both women are landing in the pocket. Nunes is in control here as round one comes to s close.

Round Two:

Pennington’s leg is a mess, but the gutsy bantamweight is actually starting to find her groove and take some momentum from the champion.

Nunes is continuing to work her legs kicks with great effect, as Pennington is clearly injured by them. But the challenger won’t go away easily and stays in Nunes face in spite of it.

Nunes at 29-28 heading into round three of the five-round championship fight.

Round Three:

Nunes gets Pennington down and isn’t doing too much from the top. Some light punches until the referee rightfully stands them up.

Regardless, Nunes doing a good job of mixing it up, using takedowns and top control to pace her cardio as the bout still has two rounds to go.

Penningtons’s offense beginning to fade. Nunes takes round three for a 30-27 sweep on the scorecards heading into the championship rounds.

Round Four:

Pennington’s inactivity since 2016 is really starting to show in round four, and she’s being deftly outpaced by the champion.

Nunes still finding a home for those leg kicks, which are taking the wind out of Pennington’s sails even more so.

Nunes is winning comfortably now, and Pennington is looking more and more outmatched. Nunes easily takes round four and is one round away from a clean sweep.

Round Five:

Nunes is really starting to hurt Pennington and keeps pouring on the punishment as Pennington’s corner considers throwing in the towel. Minutes after her corner declined to stop the fight, Nunes finishes her regardless in the fifth round.

Amanda Nunes remains the women’s bantamweight champion with a fifth-round TKO finish.
