Tyron Woodley Will Fight At UFC 228 Card Even If Darren Till Misses Weight
Tyron Woodley will be defending his welterweight title against Darren Till on Sept. 8 in Dallas.
Previously UFC tried to book Woodley vs. Covington for headliner bout at UFC 228, but ‘Chaos’ couldn’t fight at the proposed date due to sinus surgery, wanted to be back in November, but promotion can’t wait that long, so matchmakers went on to give a nod to Woodley versus Till.
Yesterday, Covington’s coach went on to express his frustration on the title shot situation saying UFC offering Woodley fight to Till is “devaluing” belts. Woodley fires back saying it’s ‘Chaos’ fault by faking an injury to dodge his showdown.
“They think they want some but they don’t really want none,” Woodley said recently on his Instagram Live. “Ain’t nobody scared of no ‘nerd-bashing.’ That motherf**ker acted like he has a sinus infection, he needed a Claritin. Boy, if you don’t get a Zyrtec in your mouth and come and get this action – because you’re gonna get it anyway if I don’t give it to you, you’ve got to get past somebody else that will.”
Ever since Covington captures the interim welterweight title by defeating Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 225, the expectation was that he’d be facing Woodley now he is on the back seat.
Woodley has successfully defended the title three times including wins over Stephen Thompson and Demain Maia. ‘The Chosen One’ has been out of action since July 2017 while recovering from shoulder surgery, and he’s excited to be back in Octagon. (Via MMAFighting)
“It’s been time to whoops some ass!” Woodley exclaimed. “I’m excited, and you know what, I want to give a shout out to Till. I just watched a little film, Till’s kind of a beast. That s**t gets me pumped up. when I fought Carlos Condit, when I fought Robbie Lawler, all these guys that are vicious, they really light that fire underneath you because you can’t sleep, you can’t rest, you can’t have a moment. Any time that I’ve had a fight against a vicious striker I’ve had to be on my P’s and Q’s.”
Darren Till last fought against Stephen Thompson back in May and won via controversial unanimous decision in front of his hometown of Liverpool. But Till came in 3 pounds overweight for that matchup and had missed weight in two of his last four fights. There is a serious concern for his upcoming title fight against Woodley if he can able to make his welterweight limit or no, but ‘The Chosen One’ doesn’t care about that.
“If Till misses weight we’re still gonna fight, it just won’t be a world title fight for him and he’ll have to forfeit a percentage of his purse,” Woodley said. “This is a big fight for him. It’s a world title opportunity and my gut says he’s gonna rise to the occasion. Whatever problems he had in the past with making weight, I believe he’s gonna make it. It’s too big of an opportunity for him not to. [And if he doesn’t] I’m not gonna hold up the fight. One or two pounds ain’t gonna really change up the dynamic or outcome of the fight so I’m gonna go into it confident and not worry about that.”
It will be interesting to watch how Woodley leans on his wrestling game against Brit star.
Between Till and Woodley who do you think will emerge victoriously?
