Jake Paul is about to step into the ring against perhaps the toughest opponent of his career. On December 19, the Ohio-born YouTuber-turned-boxer takes on former two-time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, a matchup that has stunned fans and experts alike.

This represents a major jump for Paul, who has previously faced fighters with far less experience or skill. Originally scheduled to fight Gervonta Davis in an exhibition bout, Paul now faces the massive challenge of Joshua, who boasts 28 wins, four losses, and 25 knockouts in his professional career.

Sonnen Calls It the Most Obvious Mismatch in History

For MMA veteran Chael Sonnen, the fight is staggering. On The Ariel Helwani Show’s “Uncrowned” podcast, Sonnen described the bout as one of the most one-sided he has ever seen.

“Those odds are 100% representative that the public does not believe that this is a shoot [a real fight],” Sonnen said. “This is the most obvious sporting event of my lifetime. Not even in a local little league game — there has never been a sporting event in my time on this Earth that has a more obvious outcome. The odds aren’t totally reflecting that.”

He also highlighted that other fighters have expressed doubts about Paul’s chances.

“I’ve even seen some fighters — Shakur [Stevenson] yesterday, [Deontay] Wilder came out and was like, ‘You know, Jake Paul could win.’ It’s such an insult to boxing. It truly is,” Sonnen added.

Paul has been a polarizing figure since entering professional boxing in 2020. While he has drawn massive attention with high-profile bouts, questions about the legitimacy of his victories have persisted. His November 2024 decision win over 58-year-old Mike Tyson added further controversy.

The Challenge of Facing a True Heavyweight

Sonnen also discussed how recent MMA-to-boxing crossovers have shaped public expectations.

“What happened with Francis and Tyson Fury shouldn’t have happened. What happened with Francis and Joshua should have happened,” he said. “That’s exactly what should have happened, and that’s exactly what should happen with Joshua and Paul, and I think that is fully the public’s perception. This match is just so peculiar that the odds are a little tighter because people aren’t convinced this is a shoot. I believe it’s a shoot, but I’m just telling you there is nobody, including Jake Paul’s brother, that believe Jake Paul can beat Joshua in a boxing match.”

Sonnen emphasized the danger Paul faces against a highly skilled heavyweight.

“If I picture in my head, I got my gloves on, and Anthony Joshua is coming at me, and I have nothing I can do with him but right and left hands, that is a legitimately dangerous situation,” Sonnen said. “It is truly the biggest mismatch in sport of my lifetime. And I respect Paul for doing it.”

This fight will test Jake Paul in ways he has never experienced, as he contends with the significant size, skill, and experience advantage of a world-class heavyweight. For fans and analysts, it’s a rare spectacle that challenges conventional expectations of boxing matchups.
