Tom Aspinall is facing one of the biggest challenges of his career outside the cage. After suffering a severe eye injury during his UFC 321 bout against former interim champion Ciryl Gane in October, Aspinall is sharing his journey back to full health and the Octagon.

Eye Injury and Setback

During the first defense of his undisputed heavyweight title, Aspinall’s fight was stopped after an eye poke left him unable to continue, resulting in a no-contest. The incident drew criticism from some fans and commentators, with accusations that the fighter might have been seeking a way out. Aspinall insists his vision issues are genuine and ongoing.

“By the time this is going out, I’ll probably have had surgery on one side already,” Aspinall said on his YouTube channel. “Next surgery is coming mid-January. So, we’re working toward getting back. That’s the plan.”

Medical Diagnosis and Recovery Plan

Aspinall has been consulting multiple specialists and was diagnosed with bilateral traumatic Brown’s syndrome, a condition affecting the muscles or tendons controlling eye movement. The syndrome can lead to double vision, reduced depth perception, and decreased sight. Recovery from the surgical correction is expected to take several months, likely keeping Aspinall out of full training until spring 2026.

Despite the injury, Aspinall remains determined to return stronger and take revenge for the halted fight against Gane.

“The guy was cheating from the first second, and the way he wanted to win that fight was to have me compromised by cheating,” Aspinall said. “Obviously, I’m very keen, very keen to get back and beat this guy up, but I’ve got to be 100 percent right. So, whenever the eye’s good to go, that’s when I’ll do it.”

With surgeries scheduled and a clear recovery plan, Aspinall is focused on regaining full vision and Octagon readiness. Fans and fellow fighters are eagerly awaiting the return of the UK heavyweight, whose dedication to his craft and resilience in the face of injury remain evident.
