- T.J. Dillashaw believes there’s a way to possibly threaten or defeat Jon Jones
- The former bantamweight champion is certain Tom Aspinall is the only fighter who could give “Bones” problems
T.J. Dillashaw shared an interesting insight about how to possibly beat Jon Jones, which Tom Aspinall should do if they ever ended up fighting.
Be aggressive and reckless
Speaking on the Jaxxon Podcast, the former UFC bantamweight champion pointed out that no other fighter could outmatch Jones using technique. According to Dillashaw, what could work against a highly intelligent and skill fighter like “Bones” is being aggressive and reckless.
“There’s a few things that makes Jon Jones so great, it is his mind. He’s great at seeing things, he’s great at game planning… This guy could have played other sports. He’s like a real athlete fighting heavyweights, his range is insane for heavyweight… he’s always at his range and I think the only way to even threaten, which we’ve seen against Jon Jones, is when guys kinda just get reckless and go like, Dominick Reyes just went for it. [Thiago] Santos… he went for it.”
“Like, you can’t try to fight him technique for technique. One, cause he’s got great eyes. Two, he’s got the athletic ability and three, his range is unlike any other fighter, he’s got the longest reach,” he added.
Tom got the best chance of beating Jones
For Dillashaw, Aspinall has proven that he has the athleticism and skill set to match Jones. However, Dillashaw emphasized that Aspinall should forget about strategies and go hard and wild if he wants to beat “Bones.”
“I do think he’s got the best chance, I still think Jones wins, but because Aspinall can like cover distance so fast, he’s got real good spring in his step and he’s a real athlete, that guy could play football like, he’s a big dude… I do think he’s dangerous enough to give Jones a fight but again, he’s gonna have to just bring it he can’t like try to like out-technique him and stand at his distance. He has to f**king go,” Dillashaw said.
Jones had just defended his heavyweight title at UFC 309 by stopping Stipe Miocic. However, he is not interested in a unification bout with Aspinall and wants to face Alex Pereira instead. UFC president Dana White, meanwhile, is already vouching for Aspinall vs. Jones in another massive event.
