Women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes bludgeoned Raquel Pennington for the better part of four rounds at UFC 224 before Rocky seek her cornermen that ‘I am done’ instead of waving off the fight, Pennington’s corner pushed her back out for the fifth round and final round. Nunes ruthlessly wear out Pennington, living up to her “Lioness” nickname. Since then Rocky’s cornerman receives a heavy dose of criticism from pundits, fans, and fighters.
Tecia Torres, Pennington’s fiancee and teammate at Colorado Springs’ Triple Threat Gym, isn’t having the backlash posted on social media saying both Pennington, and she agreed to corner’s decision:
“Both us and our coaches agree with the decision made to go into the 5th round,” the post read. “We know Raquel more than anyone else and know if we let her give up on herself going into the last round she would have always regretted it. She fought with heart and grit until the end.”
Recently former bantamweight champion Miesha Tate, who was retired by Rocky also support Pennington’s cornermen’s decision not to stop the fight.
