Taila Santos has revealed the strategy she believes will get her the title against Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 275.
Reigning UFC women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko has proven to be a dominant force in the division. Going into the contest as a huge favorite, ‘Bullet’ will be looking to extend her win streak to nine this June 11. Her most recent outing came against Lauren Murphy, who she dispatched via TKO.
Shevchenko will clash with the challenger Taila Santos, who’s riding on a four-fight win streak that saw her beat Molly McCann and submit Joanne Wood in her last outing.
Taila Santos shares game plan to beat Shevchenko
In a recent episode of the Combate podcast, Taila Santos talked about her game plan for achieving a stunning upset over Shevchenko. While Santos acknowledges her adversary’s grappling abilities, she believes there’s one weakness in the champion’s game that she could take advantage of.
“I believe I’m taking this fight to the ground. Valentina is a very tough fighter. Her strong suit is in the striking game, but I believe I can be successful on the ground.”
“She’s very tough on the feet. She has defeated some really tough fighters. She’s also really smart, but I believe I’ll find success on the ground. That’s where I feel super comfortable. I come from a muay thai school, so I also feel great on the feet. However, I see her weaknesses on the ground, so I believe that’s the area where I’ll find success in the fight.”
Taking on a competitor like Shevchenko is no walk in the park for any athlete. Amanda Nunes is the only opponent who holds a win over the Kyrgyzstani-Peruvian fighter in the last decade having beaten her twice between 2016 and 2017.
For the co-main event of UFC 275, Valentina Shevchenko will defend her title against Taila Santos on June 11 in Singapore. The women’s flyweight bout will be followed by the headlining match for the light heavyweight title between reigning champ Glover Teixeira and challenger Jiri Prochazka.
