Tai Tuivasa’s losing streak hit seven fights at UFC Perth.

Tuivasa lost a unanimous decision to Louie Sutherland on Saturday at RAC Arena, with all three judges scoring it 30-26. Sutherland took the fight on short notice, repeatedly grounded Tuivasa, and used long stretches of top control to shut down the Australian heavyweight.

The result continues a brutal slide for Tuivasa, who was already coming off his sixth straight defeat at UFC 325. He had early success with punches and an elbow, but Sutherland survived the exchanges, forced clinches, and turned the fight into a wrestling-heavy grind.

Tuivasa’s Heavyweight Slide Gets Worse

Tuivasa is Tai Anthony Tuivasa, an Australian UFC heavyweight born in Sydney, and his professional MMA record now stands at 14-10 after the Sutherland loss. He made his UFC debut in 2017, knocked out Rashad Coulter with a flying knee, and became the first Indigenous Australian to win a UFC fight. He later built a five-fight UFC winning streak from 2020 to 2022 with knockouts over Stefan Struve, Harry Hunsucker, Greg Hardy, Augusto Sakai, and Derrick Lewis.

That version of Tuivasa feels far away now. His recent skid already included a three-round loss to Tallison Teixeira at UFC 325, and Sutherland made the problem worse in front of the Australian crowd.

Sutherland controlled the second round from side control and mount, then scored another takedown in the third. Tuivasa was later docked a point for an illegal knee while Sutherland was down, which locked in the wide scorecards.

After the win, Sutherland fired back at the crowd and called for Marcin Tybura in Serbia.

“Listen, me and my coaches said it, we done a big 360, we started here, it didn’t go to plan,” Sutherland said. “But that’s on a week’s notice, who you f*cking booing? I love fighting. I’ve know I’ve got the skills to win in this organization. Get me anybody, I’ll fight them all. Marcin Tybura, Serbia, let’s have at it!”

For Tuivasa, the problem is obvious. The power is still there, but he could not stay upright long enough to make it matter. Sutherland did not need a highlight finish. He needed takedowns, control, and discipline, and that was enough to hand Tuivasa another damaging loss on a UFC Perth card built around Australian interest.
