Sydney Sweeney is clapping back at a slew of jealous internet trolls who relentlessly body-shamed her on social media.
Since her breakout role on HBO’s Euphoria, Sweeney has become one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Earlier this year, she received critical acclaim for her hosting job on Saturday Night Live and struck box-office gold with the hit rom-com Anyone But You. She also launched her own production company, Fifty-Fifty Films.
But despite all her success in the world of television and film, 99% of the conversations surrounding Sweeney typically focus on her immaculate physical presence — pun not intended.
Unfortunately, Sweeney’s undeniable beauty has attracted more than lustful men and women admiring her assets. It’s also caught the attention of keyboard warriors who have insisted on slamming the starlet on her social media channels. The most recent example came earlier this week when a set of paparazzi photos published by multiple outlets showed Sweeney wearing a purple bikini in front of her lakefront mansion in the Florida Keys.
The photos led to a flood of negative comments from online users who disparaged the apparent change in her appearance after undergoing an intense training regimen for a yet-to-be-released film.
One individual wrote, “All women are catfish. The question is, to what degree,” while others were much more direct with their criticism. Another commenter called her “frumpy” while others said she was, “very chunky” or “a five at best.”
“Nothing stunning at all, outdated and not looking lean,” a comment read while another cruelly suggested that Sweeney looked like “The Pillsbury Dough girl.”
In response, Sweeney shared a video on Instagram that compiled many of those hateful comments before switching to a montage of her boxing, flipping tires, and lifting weights.
Sydney Sweeney Set to Play Women’s Boxing Icon Christy Martin in Upcoming Biopic
The last shot of the above video flashes the name Christy Martin, a legend in the world of women’s boxing who Sweeney will portray in an upcoming biopic.
Sweeney underwent intense training and a complete body transformation to play Martin, a former WBC super welterweight world champion and the first female fighter to be signed by iconic boxing promoter Don King. Martin was also the first female boxer to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
“I grappled and did kickboxing from 12-19 years old. I’ve been itching to get back into the ring, train, and transform my body,” Sweeney said in an interview with Deadline. “Christy’s story isn’t a light one. It’s physically and emotionally demanding. There’s a lot of weight to carry. But I love challenging myself.
“Christy Martin not only legitimized female boxing, she overcame gender stereotypes and fought through emotional, physical, and financial abuse. I’m passionate about the fighting world. Christy’s story shines a light on her incredible rise to the top while showing the struggles of fame behind the curtains. I feel compelled to tell a story about a woman who faced so much adversity and didn’t allow it to defeat her. It’s powerful and emotional.”
In 2010, Martin was stabbed several times and shot at least once by her then-husband, 66-year-old James V. Martin. Miraculously, she survived the attack, and Mr. Martin was taken into custody a week later. He is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence at Graceville Correctional Facility in Graceville, Florida.
