Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson suffered a significant shin injury during a split decision loss to Gabriel Bonfim in the UFC Fight Night co-main event on July 12, 2025, at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. A checked leg kick opened a deep cut on his shin, requiring stitches. The 42-year-old continued fighting, landing a notable head kick, but Bonfim earned the nod with 29-28, 28-29, 29-28 scores. Post-fight, Thompson, on crutches, shared a video update.

“Well, got to get back, heal my shin up, maybe do some more shin conditioning, but love you guys,” he said.

Thompson’s UFC Tenure

Since debuting in the UFC in 2012, Thompson holds a 12-9-1 record across 22 fights. He challenged for the welterweight title twice against Tyron Woodley in 2016 and 2017, securing a draw and a loss. His karate-based striking has tested top names like Rory MacDonald and Jorge Masvidal. However, recent years have been challenging, with five losses in his last six fights, including a knockout to Joaquin Buckley in October 2024 and a submission to Shavkat Rakhmonov earlier.

The Bonfim fight was competitive. Thompson outstruck Bonfim 78 to 55 and defended nine of 14 takedown attempts. His head kick staggered Bonfim, but the Brazilian’s pressure and a late takedown convinced two judges. Media scorecards heavily favored Thompson, with 12 of 14 giving him the win, sparking debate over the decision.

Road Ahead for Wonderboy

Thompson’s injury will sideline him for an undetermined period. He thanked UFC medical staff for stitching the wound, which he described as “split to the bone.” With one fight left on his contract, the UFC’s oldest active fighter faces a critical juncture. Before the bout, he told MMA Fighting, “I’ve got one fight left, depending on how these go, I’ll decide whether I keep going.”

He’s expressed interest in fighting until 47, inspired by Randy Couture’s longevity. A victory could have positioned him for bouts against Kevin Holland or Michael Morales. Now, recovery is his focus. Thompson’s resilience was evident, fighting two rounds with a severe injury, and his sportsmanship shone through, inviting Bonfim to climb the cage post-fight.

Thompson’s future remains uncertain with one fight left. His skill and durability keep him a respected figure in the welterweight division. For now, he’s prioritizing healing, with plans to return to the octagon stronger.
