Stephen Thompson Believes RDA Can’t Beat Champ Tyron Woodley

Stephen Thompson went to war with Jorge Masvidal, to see who would be climbing the 170-pound ladder and position themselves in title contention. Both athletes went on exchanging strikes for pretty much the entire fight, and when it was all said and done, it was Thompson who walked away with the decision at UFC 217. After this win Wonderboy currently sits atop the UFC’s official rankings, but end up injuring his hand.

Last week, Rafael dos Anjos scored an impressive decision win over ex-welterweight titleholder Robbie Lawler in the main event at UFC on FOX 26 from Winnipeg. RDA establishes himself in a prime position for a title shot.

One person, who isn’t very impressed with RDA’s performance and doesn’t believe he deserves a title shot, a top contender Stephen Thompson.

“I figured RDA would really pick up the pace and try and finish him,” Thompson told MMA Fighting. “But he didn’t, he just kind of tried to outpoint him with shots, so he didn’t really impress me then to get that title shot.”

Thompson fought Woodley back in 2016 at UFC 205 and ended up battling the champion to a majority draw. In their rematch earlier this year, Wonderboy suffered a decision loss before coming back with a recent win over Jorge Masvidal.

Woodley currently sidelines after undergoing shoulder surgery, so Wonderboy feels Rafael Dos Anjos should go through him before earning a title shot at Woodley. Anjos may be willing to wait for his return, but Thompson can’t wait longer.

“Do I think he can beat the champ? No, I don’t think so,” Thompson said. “In my eyes, I think he should fight the No. 1 guy before he steps up to that title shot just to be sure he’s ready for it.”

Do you think RDA should fight Wonderboy before entitle to take a shot at the title?
