Sometimes a gi is not a gi. Sometimes it represents an investment in your future. Sometimes it demonstrates a commitment to a lifestyle which will see you claustrophobically wrapped up in the bodies of others, barely able to stifle a breath, only to hear the buzzer go off, switch partners and do it all again. When you’re explaining why your neck is rubbed so raw it looks like you’re back to being a teenager dating someone who ravages you with hickies, sometimes your gi is the easiest way to explain to friends and relatives that you’re really not. A gi more often than not will cost you a fortune trying to keep it clean.
