A New Year in Japan
Sean O’Malley chose to spend his New Year’s Eve far from home, attending RIZIN 49 at the legendary Saitama Super Arena in Japan. The event, known for its thrilling matchups and vibrant atmosphere, left a big impression on the former UFC bantamweight champion.
O’Malley’s Interest in Fighting in Japan
After witnessing the energy and excitement of Japanese MMA, O’Malley admitted he would love to compete in Japan. However, he acknowledged that the unique rules in Japanese promotions, like allowing kicks and knees to grounded opponents, might pose a challenge. Additionally, transitioning from the UFC’s cage to RIZIN’s boxing-style ring would be another adjustment.
“Right now, obviously, I’m with the UFC,” O’Malley said. “I plan to be with the UFC forever, so if the UFC comes here some day, I would love to fight in this arena. There’s a good energy here. The production of the show was incredible, the energy in the arena was incredible, the ring girls are incredible. Overall impression of Japan, this has been the most fun trip I’ve ever been on and I would love to come back.”
“I noticed when I went in there, the ring is a lot softer than the UFC,” O’Malley continued. “The UFC platform is thinner. That would be a little bit different. The ruleset, for me, I feel like it benefits me more not being able to get kicked in the head because I’m the one above someone. If I get taken down I’m usually on my back. So that would probably not be as good for me. But it would be interesting.”
Spotlight on a Rising Star
Among the highlights of the night, O’Malley mentioned the performance of heavyweight newcomer Ed Polo King. Standing six-foot-eight, the debuting fighter made a statement with a first-round knockout, catching O’Malley’s attention with his size and agility.
Focused on the Future
While Japan remains an exciting prospect, O’Malley has set his sights on reclaiming his UFC bantamweight title. Recently, he announced plans to step away from social media to focus entirely on training and making a strong comeback in 2025.
Sean O’Malley, holding an impressive 18-2 record, faced a setback last fall when he lost his UFC bantamweight title to Merab Dvalishvili during the UFC 306 event. Adding to his challenges, the 30-year-old recently underwent hip surgery, a procedure expected to sideline him until mid-2025 as he focuses on recovery and returning to peak form.
What Lies Ahead for O’Malley
O’Malley’s visit to Japan has sparked curiosity about his future. Fans are now left wondering if the bright lights of the Saitama Super Arena could host one of his next battles.
