Sean O’Malley believes Charles Oliveira would give Khabib Nurmagomedov problems.

When Nurmagomedov retired after UFC 254 in 2020, the MMA world saw so many future fantasy matchups die, unfortunately. However, with Charles Oliveria emerging as the best lightweight in the world in the absence of Nurmagomedov, questions have been raised on who would win if they were to fight.

Khabib ducking?

In a recent interview with Canal Encarada, O’Malley believes ‘Do Bronx’ would give Nurmagomedov a problem and likes his chances.

“That’s the one interesting fight that I would like to see if Khabib came back in the division. It would be Charles. Everyone else I think Khabib kind of mauls,” O’Malley said. “I think Charles is the only one that can really give Khabib problems and, who knows, maybe that’s why Khabib stepped away.”

Nurmagomedov ducking Oliveira is a really big claim, but it is possible. However, when ‘The Eagle’ flew away from MMA with an undefeated record, Oliviera had yet to defeat Tony Ferguson at UFC 256. It is an interesting theory nonetheless.

Charles is the champ

‘Sugar’ is like the rest of the MMA community and believes Oliveira is still the rightful champion after he was stripped at UFC 274 for missing weight.

“Charles is the champ and everyone knows it,” O’Malley said. “I don’t think anybody looks at him as not being the champ. I don’t think you can find one person that thinks he’s not the champ or wouldn’t call him the champ. I hope he got his pay-per-view money, I hope he is making the championship money going into the next fight. Everyone’s got to look at him as the champ, the fight’s he’s been doing, the performances he’s been putting on. Charles Oliveira’s the champ and everyone knows it.”

O’Malley faces Pedro Munhoz at UFC 276 on July 2.
