Brendan Schaub hit out at the judge preceding Cain Velasquez’s ongoing trial.
Velasquez was recently denied bail a second time in his ongoing attempted murder case after he was originally denied bail in his March arraignment.
Judge Shelyna Brown summarized the reasons based on the defense’s proposal that Velasquez may be suffering from a traumatic brain injury and potential CTE which led to his actions.
“The defense has proposed a medical change with regard to TBI (traumatic brain injury) and CTE. They have presented some evidence that Mr. Velasquez suffers from TBI and possibly from CTE. They argue that perhaps it’s one of, or both of, these medical concerns or conditions that may have led to a lack of impulse control”
“The court always appreciates community interest in a case, but the court is not ruled by community opinion at all. The court is ruled only by the law. The law, in this case, is clear.”
Brown also added that Velasquez showed a reckless disregard for human life in his actions.
“This was such a reckless disregard for human life,” Brown said. “In this case, it is not just Mr. Goularte and his family. It is every single citizen who was in danger of being shot or rammed with the vehicle at the time of this seven-mile chase.
“So this court is not thinking of not only of Mr. Goularte and his family but this court is considering every single citizen in Santa Clara county who was in proximity to this alleged incident.”
Brendan Schaub: Pray That This Goes To A Jury
Schaub was not a fan of the latter comments.
Discussing the situation, the former fighter-turned-comedian believes all the years of Velasquez being a stand-up citizen shouldn’t be erased for this particular incident, especially given the circumstances.
He also hopes that the verdict eventually goes to a jury as he believes the judge has the old school mindset of regarding MMA fighters as human cockfighters.
“What about the years of being a stand-up citizen, a professional world-class athlete, a great dad, a face of the UFC, a face of Mexican-American people?” Schaub said on his podcast (via BJ Penn). “What about all of the years where he was a model citizen, that just goes out the window?… With Cain, all of the years of being a great human being, all those years, now one incident and he has a reckless disregard for human life?”
“If you’re a Cain Velasquez fan, you have to pray this goes to a jury, and that’s it not up to this judge. This judge is clearly not playing with him. Clearly already thinks that he’s a human cockfighter. You have this old judge who’s stuck in her ways, it has to go to a jury.”
Velasquez faces a number of charges, including attempted first-degree murder, after he shot the stepfather of Harry Goularte Jr.
The former UFC heavyweight champion was intending to shoot Goularte after he allegedly molested Velasquez’s relative.
Velasquez is now set for a formal plea hearing on June 10.
