Rumble Johnson Would Make Light Heavyweight to Face Jon Jones
Just last week, Anthony “Rumble” Johnson expressed his interest to return to MMA in 2020. He mentioned taking on Francis Ngannou and eventually wanting to fight for the UFC heavyweight title. Now, Rumble seems to have his eyes set on light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. While Rumble looks to be the largest he’s ever been, he’s willing to cut down to 205lbs if it means having a chance to fight Jon Jones.
Ironically, Anthony Johnson spoke about cutting extra weight on his appearance of Brendan Schaub’s Food Truck Diaries series. The pair enjoyed tacos and soda as they spoke about Bare Knuckle boxing. Also, they spoke about Rumble Johnson facing Jon Jones.
Rumble on Facing Jon Jones
“We’ll make it happen (the fight against Jon Jones) if I get low enough (in weight). I’ll get to 205lbs. That’s a fight I wanted. I think Jon wanted that fight, too, before everything happened. That situation, which, it’s over with, it’s in the past,” Johnson replied.
“When we see each other there’s no animosity, we show each other love. But that was a fight, that’s why I went up to 205lbs man. That’s the guy I want. And then you know, when I get my heartbroken, I have to fight Daniel Cormier, it’s not as motivating. The fight wasn’t in me to fight DC, but I fought him, kind of fought him, but it wasn’t the same drive,” finished Rumble.
Rumble vs Jones History
In the interview, Rumble also confirmed that he currently weighs over 270 lbs. Well over the heavyweight limit. But, if Rumble gets the chance to fight Jon Jones, he won’t pass it up.
Both Jones and Johnson were expected to fight back at UFC 187. However, Jon’s hit-and-run incident got him removed from the card. The event also got Jon stripped of his UFC light heavyweight title. Rumble went on to face Daniel Cormier alternatively for the vacant UFC light heavyweight title. He lost the bout via rear-naked choke.
Do you believe it’s possible for Rumble Johnson to make the 205lb threshold? If so, would fans rather see Anthony Johnson at light heavyweight or face some of the heavyweight talents instead?
