Climbing her way up the flyweight rankings, former 115-pound titleholder ‘Thug’ Rose Namajunas returned to the Octagon at UFC Atlanta for a high-stakes clash with surging standout Miranda Maverick.
Namajunas came up short in her last outing, falling to Erin Blanchfield. Now, she’ll look to climb back into the win column by staving off Maverick, who entered the bout riding a four-fight win streak.
Round 1
Namajunas starts the offense with a front kick up the middle. Maverick responds with a kick to the former champ’s lead leg. Maverick keeps the leg kicks coming as Namajunas starts to let her hands go. Maverick lands a nice left hand after connecting with another calf kick. Maverick goes for a high kick, and Namajunas counters with a right hand that lands clean. Maverick is starting to get a little busy, throwing a body kick with a right hand behind it. Namajunas fires back with a right of her own.
Maverick goes for a spinning back elbow that misses, but partially connects with a right hand. Maverick is holding her own against ‘Thug’ Rose thus far. With just over a minute to go in the round, Namajunas shoots in for a single-leg takedown, driving Maverick near the fence. Maverick manages to stay upright and fights off Namajunas before returning to the center of the Octagon. Namajunas is sporting some redness on her left thigh from the barrage of leg kicks.
Maverick ends the round pushing forward and throwing a combination, but comes up short.
Round 2
Things get off to a hot start with Maverick immediately throwing a combination. Namajunas counters with a three-punch combination. Namajunas moves in swinging, but Maverick uses her footwork to stay out of danger. Maverick moves in for a knee up the middle. Namajunas sees it coming and scores an easy takedown, settling into Maverick’s full guard with three-and-a-half minutes left in the round.
Maverick goes fishing for a triangle choke. Maverick quickly gives it up and ultimately gives up her back in a bid to try and get up. Namajunas climbs on like a backpack and nearly falls off, but she maintains her balance and forces Maverick back down to the canvas. Namajunas is doing a great job of flowing with Maverick to stay on her back as we hit the final 60 seconds of the round. Namajunas is looking to lock in a rear-naked choke. Namajunas is cranking at it, but Maverick defends and scrambles her way out of the position.
During the scramble, Maverick ends up on top and falls directly into an arm triangle with 20 seconds left. Namajunas rolls and gets herself out of the hold, but eats a barrage of ground-and-pound strikes before the horn sounds.
Round 3
Namajunas comes in swinging, and Maverick shoots for a single leg. Namajunas defends, but Maverick keeps her pressed against the cage wall. Before long, Maverick gives up the hold and separates. Back in the center of the Octagon, Namajunas connects with a left hook straight to the temple that drops Maverick. Namajunas swarms in and drops a slew of strikes on the mat, but Maverick is holding on for dear life as she shakes out the cobwebs.
Namajunas looks for a triangle choke, but Maverick has her locked into half guard. Namajunas lets the hold go, and Maverick uses it as an opportunity to scramble and try to get on top. Namajunas rolls with her and gets back on top, taking side control. Maverick works her back into full guard with 40 seconds left in the middle round. Namajunas holds top control, letting the clock run out on their exciting back-and-forth scrap.
