- Rose Namajunas hopes to be a title contender with a win over Tracy Cortez at UFC Denver
- “Thug” is confident that she could be a two-weight champion
Rose Namajunas firmly believes a win over Tracy Cortez at UFC Denver will catapult her to a title shot at flyweight.
A win away from title contention
Speaking to MMA Junkie, “Thug” is confident that she has done well in her first flyweight win over Amanda Ribas. With that in mind, Namajunas is certain that she would be in the title mix if she ends up beating Cortez at UFC Denver as well.
“I think, I’d say I’m right in that title contention talks. God willing, I’m healthy, I’m in shape and I’m ready to go with a win and whatever opportunities they want to give me. I could see myself fighting for the belt really soon. It’s just a matter of doing my job and fighting to the best of my abilities. Anything’s possible,” Namajunas said.
Rose wants to be champ-champ
Namajunas also opened up about her desire to join the coveted champ-champ club in the UFC. As it stands, “Thug” is already a former UFC strawweight champion and she is aiming to dominate the flyweight division too.
“When I first started my career in the UFC, that was my vision that I had in mind. It wasn’t super solid, but I definitely wanted to become champion,” Namajunas said. “And then, somewhere in the back of my mind, I thought to become champion in two divisions, as well. But that was so far in the distance that I never became a champion before so it’s kind of like, I wasn’t sure if I could make that happen. But now I know that I can.”
Namajunas is now 1-1 as a flyweight. She is currently the No. 6 in the women’s 125-pound division and is very hopeful that a win over the No. 11 ranked Cortez could take her a step closer to the belt.
Namajunas was originally booked against Maycee Barber but Cortez stepped in after “The Future” pulled out of the fight due to undisclosed reasons. UFC Denver will take place this weekend at Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado.
