Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano went face-to-face again in New York, and this one had a different feel. About a month before their scheduled fight on Netflix, the two former stars met after Wednesday’s press conference in Manhattan and looked a lot less relaxed than they did the first time around.
The faceoff came after the latest media event for the May 16 card, which is set to take place at Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California. MiddleEasy has already covered the build around Rousey’s return and the Carano matchup and the growing attention around MVP MMA 1 as a full event, and this latest staredown added another layer to that push.
Rousey and Carano had their second staredown after Wednesday’s press conference in Times Square. Compared to their first faceoff on March 10, the two looked less friendly and more focused when they got in front of each other again.
Rousey (12-2) is stepping back into competition for the first time in nearly a decade, while Carano (7-1) has not fought in MMA since 2009. Those long layoffs are a huge part of why every appearance keeps drawing so much attention.
Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano sell the Netflix fight with a colder second staredown
Most Valuable Promotions, the company behind major Netflix combat sports shows involving Jake Paul, is promoting the card, and the Rousey-Carano fight is carrying the main-event spotlight. That has already made each appearance part of the sales pitch, just like the Nate Diaz vs. Mike Perry faceoff helped sell the rest of the show.
This latest video worked because of the body language. The first staredown carried more novelty. This one looked more like two veterans settling into the fact that fight week is getting closer.
