Robelis Despaigne is back under UFC contract, closing the door on immediate talk of a Francis Ngannou fight after his violent reset at MVP MMA 1.
The Cuban heavyweight’s return was announced Friday by First Round Management and later circulated by MMA Orbit. Despaigne had been outside the UFC since late 2024, but his first-round knockout of former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos on Netflix gave the promotion a clean reason to bring him back.

Despaigne is still the same strange heavyweight puzzle. Sherdog lists him at 6-2, with all six wins by knockout or TKO, and his 6-foot-7 frame made him one of the most unusual athletes in the division from the moment he reached the UFC. The Olympic background is real too: UFC’s own Olympian list notes Despaigne represented Cuba in taekwondo and won bronze at London 2012.
His first UFC run came apart fast after the Josh Parisian debut. Despaigne needed only 18 seconds to stop Parisian at UFC 299, then dropped back-to-back unanimous decisions to Waldo Cortes-Acosta and Austen Lane. Those losses made the blueprint obvious: make him grapple, extend the fight, and see whether the kickboxer can stay upright long enough to use the weapons that got everyone excited.
Ngannou Talk Moves Off The Table
The MVP detour made this return more interesting. Despaigne stopped Dos Santos in the opening round at MVP MMA 1, the same Netflix card where Francis Ngannou knocked out Philipe Lins and Ronda Rousey submitted Gina Carano. That was enough to start fantasy matchmaking around Despaigne and Ngannou, especially with both men sitting in the same heavyweight conversation after quick finishes.
That path is gone at this stage. Despaigne is back with the UFC, Ngannou remains tied to the MVP/PFL orbit, and no UFC return opponent has been announced. The next booking will show whether the promotion gives Despaigne a measured test or throws him into another striker-friendly matchup to see if the knockout threat still plays at the UFC level.
The stakes are simple. Despaigne’s power never needed a sales pitch, but his second UFC run has to answer the same questions that ended the first one. If the grappling has improved, heavyweight gets another dangerous finisher. If it has not, matchmakers already know exactly how opponents will try to break the reset.
