Robbie Lawler Vs. Stephen Thompson In Works For UFC’s First ESPN Card In January

Robbie Lawler And Stephen Thompson Targeted For January 18th On ESPN

Top two welterweight contenders will set to clash at the UFC’s debut event on ESPN on January 18, 2019.

According to MMAJunkie, former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler and former title challenger Stephen Thompson are set to square off in an unannounced event on ESPN. The promotion has still to announce the bout, as Lawler is still recovering from ACL injury and waiting for final clearance from doctors.

Lawler last fought in December 2017 at UFC on FOX 26 in Winnipeg, where he suffered a decision loss to Rafael dos Anjos and tore his ACL on that matchup. Lawler dropped to 1-1 since losing a 170-pound title to Tyron Woodley back in July 2016.

Thompson is coming off a controversial split decision loss to Darren Till last May. Before this loss, ‘Wonderboy’ beat Jorge Masvidal.

The January’s event will be a debut of promotion with ESPN, and it will set to go down under ESPN’s flagship network, not ESPN+. That deal with ESPN paying the UFC $300 million a year.
