Renato Moicano has spoken out after the UFC confirmed Charles Oliveira will fight Rafael Fiziev on October 11, 2025, at the Farmasi Arena in Rio de Janeiro. Moicano says the fight helps save UFC Rio’s main event but could come at a high cost to Oliveira’s career.
This will be UFC’s first event in Rio since UFC 301 in May 2024 and the first Fight Night in the city since 2015.
Moicano Questions the Matchup
Moicano gave a detailed view in Portuguese on his YouTube channel:
“The UFC just surprised everyone again. Who expected that Charles Oliveira would come back so quickly and against a knockout artist in Rio de Janeiro? I personally think this fight makes no sense for Charles. It makes perfect sense for Rafael Fiziev.”
He added, “UFC just saved UFC Rio. UFC Rio was having a problem figuring out who was going to be the main event. It was talked a lot about Jailton Almeida, but then they put him against (Alexander) Volkov somewhere else.”
Moicano continued, “In my opinion, this is the worst fight in the rankings for Charles Oliveira. It’s a fight that doesn’t add anything for Charles. Great, you beat Rafael Fiziev. What changes then? What does this change in the ranking? I don’t think it changes anything. If Fiziev beats him, which I think is most likely, unfortunately. … Why did he accept this fight? Why did his team accept this fight?”
He finished bluntly:
“You saved UFC Rio, but at the price of destroying Charles Oliveira’s career.”

Oliveira’s Recent History and Mindset
Oliveira returns 105 days after suffering a knockout loss to Ilia Topuria at UFC 317 in June 2025. This quick turnaround is notable for a fighter coming off a tough defeat. Oliveira holds the No. 3 lightweight ranking, behind Topuria and Islam Makhachev.
His head coach Diego Lima confirmed Oliveira pushed to fight in Brazil, saying:
“He wants to fight in front of his fans, bring people who can’t get visas, and that the UFC understood that request.”
Oliveira himself shared his mindset:
“When I lost, same thing — I had to come back better. So that’s exactly what I’m doing. I went home, took a breath, and got back to training because I want to be better. I made the request to Hunter and the UFC to fight in Brazil in front of my family in front of my people. That would be something magical. And thank God, it’s happening.”
He added, “Of course it’s a really tough opponent — Fiziev is no joke. But I’m genuinely happy and focused. My mindset is bulletproof. And when I’m happy when I’m feeling bold, things just flow naturally. Last night when I got the message saying everything’s confirmed main event, I said ‘All right let’s make it happen.’”
Charles Oliveira is a former UFC lightweight champion with a record of 34 wins and 9 losses. He is known for his grappling and submission skills but has faced tough challenges recently.
Rafael Fiziev, ranked No. 10, is a powerful striker with a Muay Thai background and a record of 15 wins and 4 losses. He is considered one of the division’s best knockout artists.
Moicano, a respected lightweight ranked No. 11, fought Fiziev previously and was knocked out by him in 2020. This experience informs his views on the matchup.
The lightweight division currently has Ilia Topuria as champion, Islam Makhachev as No. 2, and other top contenders like Arman Tsarukyan, Max Holloway, and Justin Gaethje above Oliveira and Fiziev.
Moicano’s warning shows a clear conflict between promotional needs and fighter safety. UFC needed a big main event for Rio and chose Oliveira vs. Fiziev. For Oliveira, this fight could either be a comeback or a setback.
Losing could push Oliveira further from a title shot, while a win might not immediately guarantee one due to Fiziev’s lower ranking.
Moicano says the UFC could have arranged a safer fight for Oliveira, like a rematch with Dan Hooker or Justin Gaethje or a fight against Max Holloway.
This situation reflects the balancing act MMA promotions face between fans, fighters, rankings, and business.
