Dustin Poirier has finally responded to Colby Covington’s words against him.

The #1 welterweight contender would call Poirier out for a fight earlier this month. The call-out would be made after Covington dominated his former teammate Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272. This isn’t the first former teammate Covington has beaten and he doesn’t want it to the be the last.

Covington has dispatched of American Top Team alumni Robbie Lawler, Tyron Woodley and of course Masvidal. ‘The Diamond’, who also trains out of ATT, is next up on Covington’s ‘hit list’. However, Poirier doesn’t seem all too interested in avenging his teammates’ losses.

‘It’s Still On Sight’

He isn’t wanting to go back on his word. In February, he said he won’t ever fight ‘Chaos’ in the Octagon… only outside of it.

“[Covington is] not making money off my name,” Poirier said in a deleted tweet. “It’s still on sight you f*cking sheep.”

Adding on to this, Poirier labeled Covington’s trash talk towards him as ‘cute’.

“It’s cute,” Poirier told ESPN at UFC Vegas 50. “It’s all good. It is what it is. People want big fights. That’s a big fight. He wants big fights.

“Obviously he’s not in line for the title fight. He lost twice to the champ, so he probably needs a few more wins. But I would think if you want to get back to that strap you have to fight welterweight contenders. I don’t now what I’m doing, if I’m going to welterweight, if I’m staying at 155. We’ll see. But it is what it is.”

What About Nate Diaz?

With Covington not in his preferred options, Poirier still wants to fight Nate Diaz.

The Louisiana-native has been trading shots with the Stockton slugger for a while now. They’d reignite their beef after Poirier lost in his second undisputed title opportunity against Charles Oliveira at UFC 269.

Diaz and Poirier were both scheduled to fight each other back in 2018. 4 years later, both men want to run it back, but the fight hasn’t came into fruition just yet. ‘The Diamond’ would shine his interest in that booking once again. It sure beats Colby, in his eyes.

“Nate Diaz is a fight I want,” Poirier said. “I’ve been watching him and his brother forever, so it’s exciting for me. It would be a fun matchup for the fans. That’s more likely than the Colby fight.”
