Phil Daru Hopes Dustin Poirier Fights At 170 Next: “We Want To Eliminate That Stress”

One of Dustin's coaches hopes he fights at welterweight next.

Phil Daru hopes ‘The Diamond’ fights at welterweight next.

Where in the world is Dustin Poirier, and what weight class will he compete in next? Much speculation has been happening about the former interim lightweight champion and if he is staying at the weight class where he challenged for the belt twice.

Dustin to 170?

Before his UFC 269 loss to current champion Charles Oliveira, Poirier was teasing a move, and then after his defeat, he said he could definitely see himself making the move. Perhaps ‘The Diamond’ could shine better at welterweight than lightweight.

This week, Poirier’s strength and conditioning coach, Phil Daru, was a guest on The Schmozone Podcast and said he hopes he makes a move to 170 in his next outing.

“I hope so. It’s a lot easier for him at 170, you know. He doesn’t have to worry about the weight cut. He really never does but it is still in the back of his mind especially as a fighter. The first fight really is the scale,” Daru said. “We want to eliminate that stress and allow for him to fight where he wants to fight. Really it’s the fights that he wants to have. He’s done a lot, I think it’s over 10 years with Zuffa.”

Poirier vs. Diaz

As for what’s next, Porier wants Nate Diaz. Actually, the whole MMA fanbase wants that fight, including Diaz himself. Daru doesn’t know what’s going on with the fight, but he knows Poirier wants it.

“Yeah, I don’t know what’s going on with that. I know Dustin wants that fight but it really just depends. It’s up to the UFC and up to Nate,” Daru said. “I know Dustin wants it and is ready to go. He’s still training out there; he always trains in Louisiana. He’s been doing some off-camp strength and conditioning.”

With both fighters expressing interest in the fight, you would think the UFC would make the fight; however, nothing has happened. Daru thinks it could be the UFC holding up the fight but has hope that it will go down at UFC 276.

“I don’t want to speak out of turn,” Dark said. “But I do know that Dustin is pushing for the fight and from what it looks like, Nate wants the fight too, so maybe it is on the UFC. Hopefully they can get it done by July… for International Fight Week.”
