Markus Perez says Gamebred Boxing is taking better care of him than the UFC.

Money, Money, Money

‘Maluko’ fought in the UFC seven times from 2017 all the way to 2021. Perez went 2-5 in the promotion, having fought the likes of Eryk Anders, Anthony Hernandez and Dricus Du Plessis. Since being released by the UFC, Perez has gone 2-1 in MMA and even had a small stint in ‘pillow fighting’.

He will be making his boxing debut at Jorge Masvidal’s ‘Gamebred Boxing 4’ event on April 1st.

Perez reveals Masvidal offered him more money than the UFC did to fight knockout artist Paul Daley, but the booking wouldn’t stick as ‘Semtex’ has visa issues getting into the United States. Daley’s replacement will be fellow UFC veteran Joe ‘Diesel’ Riggs.

“I told him I’m a MMA fighter and I’ll fight anything,” Perez said on the Trocação Franca podcast. “[Masvidal] said, ‘I’ll offer you this much for a boxing match.’ I was like, ‘What? More than I was making in the UFC? I’m in. Let’s do it.’ It’s good money, but my focus is on beating the guy.”

According to Perez, the Gamebred Boxing paycheck was ‘three times’ more than what he got in the UFC.

With this kind of dough being presented, Perez is willing to fight for ‘Gamebred’ more than once.

“There’s also going to be a card in May, too,” Perez added. “Masvidal told me he wants me on the May card as well. I’m in.

“I’m very competitive in everything I do and I want to win. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I’m going there to win. Maybe that will open doors for me in MMA as well, sure, but I have to win.”

Perez Interested In Fighting Souza & Belfort

While he’s got ‘Diesel’ to worry about, the former UFC fighter threw his name in the hat to fight Vitor Belfort or ‘Jacare’ Souza, should one of them withdraw from their bout at Gamebred Boxing 4. And if that doesn’t happen, perhaps the winner of that matchup in May would suffice.

“I told [Masvidal] to make me the backup for the ‘Jacare’ and Belfort match,” he said. “If either one of them pulls out, please, I want in. I want to be the stand-by for them — and whoever wins, ‘Jacare’ or Belfort, that would be a great match for the May card, too.”

Gamebred Boxing 4 will have quite a few ex-UFC fighters stepping into the boxing ring. Along with Perez vs. Riggs and Souza vs. Belfort, former UFC Champion Jose Aldo will take on Jeremy Stephens. Anthony Pettis, another former UFC Champ, will be making his boxing debut against boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. as well.
