Following questions by the police, the UFC Middleweight’s legal team Mejon Advocacia would take action. On Wednesday, the legal team would put out a statement, denying any wrongdoing by Costa. They’d cite the allegations as ‘incompatible’ with Costa’s ‘philosophy’ and ‘human conduct’

“The recent articles published by the media involving athlete Paulo Costa – ‘Borrachinha’ [sic] referring to what happened in a shopping mall in the city of Contagem/MG generated questions, so we must present come clarifications. First, tending to sensationalism, these are reckless and inconsistent,” the statement read. “The athlete Paulo Costa – ‘Borrachinha’ [sic] and his entire team reject any type of violence.

“‘Borrachinha’ is a high-performing athlete, full time dedicated to training, to following the rules, guidelines, and disciplines. According his philosophy and human conduct this kind of allegations are completely incompatible with his history and way of life. The accusations and facts narrated do not reflect the reality of what happened.”

“The fact will be carefully investigated and the appropriate legal measures for their perfect clarification will be taken.”

The Details

Costa allegedly struck a 26 year-old nurse with an elbow. The incident would occur at a shopping center Contagem, Minas Gerais, Brazil where Costa went to get vaccinated for COVID-19.

According to reports, ‘The Eraser’ attempted to flee the scene with a filled-out vaccination card even though he wasn’t yet vaccinated. The aforementioned nurse tried to restrain him which led to Costa landing a blow. The nurse would file a criminal complaint and Costa would answer questions from the police.

Paulo Costa initially said he accidentally hit the nurse when they took ahold of his arm. Before he had his legal team get involved, the UFC fighter would poke fun at the situation on Twitter. Costa would claim he’s not guilty in one of his responses.
