Paige VanZant is preparing for a return to MMA, joining the roster of the newly established Global Fight League (GFL). Scheduled to kick off in 2025, the league introduces a fresh twist to the sport with its team-based format and a range of benefits designed to prioritize fighters.
Paige VanZant’s Journey Back to MMA
VanZant, known for her 8-5 MMA record, made a name for herself during her time in the UFC before exploring other combat sports like bare-knuckle boxing and professional wrestling. After stepping away from MMA for a few years, she is now ready to bring her skills back to the cage with GFL.
“They are picking up anybody and everybody who has a name in this sport who is a free agent,” VanZant said on ‘A Kickass Love Story’ Podcast. “… So, they offered me a contract, and I said yes. Going back to MMA. I think this is the perfect opportunity because I didn’t necessarily leave MMA.
“I definitely didn’t leave MMA because I wasn’t passionate about it anymore, but leaving when I became a free agent outside of the UFC, the biggest offer that came in was bareknuckle boxing. They were the ones, they presented the best offer to me and it was exciting, it was new. It definitely sparked my interest.
“Now, there is this new MMA organization that made me really excited to fight for them,” VanZant added. “Like, the way they’re doing it, they’re legit paying their athletes. Everybody I’ve heard thats negotiated their contract so far is extremely excited and happy.”
GFL Promises Big Changes for MMA
The league has already generated buzz with a roster of over 300 fighters, including notable names from major organizations like UFC, Bellator, and PFL. GFL’s unique approach includes a team-based competition system formed through a draft scheduled for January. Fighters will also benefit from initiatives like revenue sharing, retirement plans, insurance, and training support.
With its official launch set for April 2025, GFL is poised to shake up the MMA scene. For VanZant, this marks a new chapter in her career, combining her passion for the sport with the opportunities presented by this innovative league.
