Paddy Pimblett has never followed a predictable route in the UFC, and now he believes the final chapter of his title run may unfold in an equally unexpected way.

As he prepares for his interim lightweight championship fight, Pimblett is openly acknowledging that circumstances beyond competition could decide who holds the division’s top prize.

Pimblett’s climb at 155 pounds accelerated rapidly following his dominant victory over Michael Chandler in April 2025. Once considered a popular draw rather than a serious contender, he has since moved steadily into elite territory.

That progress led to a confirmed interim title bout against Justin Gaethje at UFC 324 on January 24. A win would normally place Pimblett on a direct path toward a title unification showdown with reigning champion Ilia Topuria.

According to Pimblett, that expectation may no longer be guaranteed.

Pimblett Speaks On Topuria’s Situation

During a recent interview with ESPN Deportes, Pimblett addressed Topuria’s ongoing absence from competition while stressing that the situation is personal rather than competitive.

“[Ilia has] got a lot going on in his personal life,” Pimblett said. “I wish him nothing but the best, that has got nothing to do with me and him fighting. That’s his family, and I hope everything goes well. I hope that goes perfectly for him.”

Topuria has stepped away to deal with legal and family matters, including a divorce process that involves custody considerations. Those issues have placed his return date in question.

While Pimblett insists his preference is to settle matters inside the Octagon, he acknowledged that prolonged inactivity often forces organizational decisions.

“All I care about is getting him in that octagon and fighting him,” Pimblett continued. “But you never know … if he doesn’t come back by June, July, then he might have to vacate his belt. I’ll become undisputed champion without even fighting.”

Such a scenario would allow Pimblett to emerge from UFC 324 as the recognized champion without a unification bout taking place.

The lightweight division currently sits at a crossroads. Champions, interim titles, injuries, and personal circumstances are all influencing what comes next. Pimblett’s situation reflects how quickly the landscape can change when timing becomes a factor.

For now, his attention remains locked on Gaethje. Beyond that, the future of the division depends less on callouts and more on availability.

Whether Pimblett earns undisputed status through combat or circumstance, his rise continues to defy conventional expectations.
