Overeem is no longer Fabricio Werdum’s son

He did it. Overeem has finally stepped out of his metaphorical Father’s shadow, the Dutchman has just pulled out the unanimous decision over Fabricio Werdum. The first round started with intense energy in the air, Werdum opening the fight with an attempted kick at the head, then closing the distance throwing combinations in an attempt to hang on to Overeem’s gigantic lats and pull guard.

Overeem would have none of it. Time after time Werdum attempted to shoot in or pull guard to no avail, making Overeem walk away and squint into the crowd for a moment while Werdum got up from his knees confusingly slowly. As the match wore on the guard pulls had more success in the takedown sector but Overeem was never in any real threatening position, nor was Werdum with Overeem on top of him either.

As the judges cards were read Bigfoot Silva was looking pleased in the crowd. Who knows where Kharitonov was, probably drinking vodka from the bottle and punching something. Either way, sometime (hopefully) soon Overeem vs Bigfoot Silva and Barnett vs Kharitonov will be on our viewing monitors.
