Nicco Montano: “Its Year 2018 And People Still Ask Me Whether We Live In Buckskin And Teepees!”
Nicco Montano (4-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) is the current UFC Women’s Inaugural Flyweight champion. She defeated Roxanne Modafferi at The Ultimate Fighter 26 Finale on December 1, 2017, via unanimous decision. According to bookmakers, she is a big underdog versus Valentina Shevchenko. The two of them will fight at the co-main event of UFC 228 for UFC Women’s Flyweight title.
Nicco Montano’s origin is half Hispanic, 25 percent Navajo, and 25 percent Chickasaw. Despite that, she identifies herself as a “Native”.
UFC is known for breaking limits and promoting various kinds of trends. This time, they came up with one of the most original ideas ever. “[People] think we live in buckskin and teepees,” Montano told Bleacher Report. “It’s 2018 and there are still people who ask that question. [UFC] literally wanted me to put on a costume. They literally wanted to see me coming out with war paint on my face. They think ‘Native’ and they think these things. I don’t want to be the token Native. I don’t want to be blasted on posters with a headdress on and with buckskin and a loin cloth.”
