Nate Diaz steps into the Octagon at UFC 279 for what many believe will be for the last time. Two-time opponent Conor McGregor congratulated Diaz on his run with the promotion and finally achieving his freedom from the organization.
It has been a rocky road for Nate Diaz over the past few years. The fan favorite has been fairly inactive for the last several years. When he steps into the UFC 279 main event against Tony Ferguson, it will be just the fourth time he’s done so in the last six years. Though, not all of that is Nate Diaz’s fault. The Stockton scrapper has been publicly roasting the UFC for several months in regards to the promotion dragging their feet on booking his last contractually obligated fight.
Finally, the time has come for Nate Diaz to close the book on his UFC career and it’s a fight that fans have been clamoring for. Even if the way we got there was a bit unorthodox. Regardless, fans and fighters are ready for Nate Diaz’s UFC swan song, including former rival Conor McGregor who congratulated Diaz for crossing the proverbial finish line in Saturday’s main event.
“Congrats Nate Diaz on making it to the end of his contractual obligations with the UFC, and as a bonafide superstar goer. An incredible feat. Fair play. Our trilogy will happen.”

Nate Diaz vs. Conor McGregor Intend to Complete Their Trilogy
When people look back on the career of Nate Diaz, many will consider his biggest victory to have come at UFC 196 in 2016. Diaz shocked the world when he defeated Conor McGregor via a second-round rear-naked choke. Five months later, the two would run it back at UFC 202. This time, McGregor would come out on top with a majority decision victory.
Many fans had hoped to see a third pairing between the two, but McGregor found himself facing Eddie Alvarez for the UFC lightweight championship less than 90 days later.
While Diaz appears ready to move on from the UFC and work on building his own promotion, Real Fight Inc, completing the trilogy with McGregor is something that he and the Irishman have every intention of doing. When and where that takes place is anyone’s guess, but no doubt fans will welcome the long-awaited trilogy bout between the two tenured MMA superstars.
