“It was not the best performance tonight but a former champion, a big wrestling guy, so pretty similar technique from both of us,” Evloev said about his win. “That’s why it was a jiu-jitsu match.
“I was working more on striking because I always have my own base. I can return to my wrestling any time, even if I don’t prepare. This was shooting all the time so I just gave him back my wrestling.”
Sterling kicked things off with a strong right hand that helped him take Evloev down to the mat. He kept the pressure on, making it difficult for Evloev to move or escape. But then, Evloev found his opening and managed to reverse the position, taking control for a moment but couldn’t do much before time ran out.
In the second round, Sterling took Evloev down again, but this time, Evloev quickly turned the tables, landing on top. They scrambled back to their feet and exchanged a few strikes before Evloev managed to bring Sterling down again. Sterling didn’t stay down for long, reversing the position and keeping the fight in constant motion.
By the third round, Sterling tried to keep Evloev on the defensive with more takedowns, but Evloev’s strength took over. He powered out of a tough spot, moved into a dominant position, and used his punches to finish strong, securing control of the round and the fight.
Evloev’s victory brings him one step closer to a title shot, though he’s not rushing into that fight just yet.
