Another leg break occurred at an MMA event this past weekend.
At the Extreme Fighting Championship 92 event in Johannesburg, South Africa, Willem Smith took on Ivan Strydom in a heavyweight bout in the event’s opener.
Unfortunately, the action ended early as Smith saw his low kick checked by Strydom. What resulted was an instant leg break with the referee stopping the action before any follow-up shots were landed.
You can watch the leg break below (viewer discretion is advised):
OUCH!
Shocking first fight of EFC92.
Wishing Willem Smith all the best on his road to recovery from this very unfortunate incident!#EFC92 pic.twitter.com/cfdoaQawot— EFC Worldwide (@EFCworldwide) March 5, 2022
Both fighters were 1-4 going into the contest with Smith’s professional record now dropping to 1-5. His last EFC outing saw him earn his first professional win.
If he is looking to earn a second one, he will likely have to wait a year at the least before he can return to competitive action.
MMA Fighter Leg Break Reminiscent Of Chris Weidman
The first thought anyone would likely have after watching the clip is Chris Weidman’s leg break against Uriah Hall last year.
Similar to Smith, Weidman saw his leg kick checked early in the first round by Hall which resulted in an instant break. However, the former UFC middleweight champion’s leg break was much more graphic and hard to watch.
It was one of only two leg breaks in UFC history with Weidman somehow being involved in the other one when he checked Anderson Silva’s low kick back in 2013 that resulted in “The Spider” breaking his leg.
Hopefully, we don’t see any more in the near future.
