MMA Beef Alert: Anthony Johnson and Alistair Overeem are fighting like a divorced couple

MMA Beef Alert: Anthony Johnson and Alistair Overeem are fighting like a divorced couple. Sometimes when couples break up, they just can’t stop fighting. That’s why people keep taking well-paying jobs as divorce attorneys, despite it being the sort of work that ruins your faith in humanity. Anthony Johnson and Alistair Overeem ended their partnership over a year ago, after the Reem injured a mutual teammate and left their training facility in Florida. But Johnson hasn’t stopped characterizing Alistair as almost demonic, an MMA version of his almost-namesake Aleister Crowley

Most recently, Anthony had this to say about his estranged sparring partner.

From Overeem’s perspective, the romance ended a long time ago, and it is time for Anthony to let go. “(He said that out of) jealousy,” Alistair said to MMA Junkie. “I can’t think of any other explanations. I have no relationship with the guy.” But he couldn’t help calling Johnson a p*ssy, a standby insult in relationship squabbles

“All this talking to the media? I don’t get,” he said. “Where I come from, if I have a problem, I’m coming directly to you and I’m asking you what’s up. For me, that’s like p*ssy behavior. Maybe I’m missing something and I’m just crazy.”

Unlike divorce proceedings that sometimes end with mutual harassment restraining orders, these feuds in MMA enjoy the luxury of sometimes resulting in sanctioned violence. That’s a good lesson for children, I suppose. Before you slash your ex’s tires in a parking garage, pick up a telephone and dial the athletic commission. It might work for Johnson and Overeem.

“I have different priorities right now,” Alistair said. “But I could definitely see that fight happening in the future.”
